Can you tell me more about Thryve’s program including educational and networking opportunities?
Thryve is an intensive 10-week program followed by a year of continuing support. It is mix of structured curriculum and unstructured, self-directed work. The curriculum is based on lean startup principles and is taught by experienced instructors and reinforced by your work with mentors and coaches. You will be provided the syllabus prior to entering the incubator.
In general, you’ll be working on your startup each day, just like all of the other founders in the program. There will be milestones and deliverables to reach, and we’ll make sure you have the tools to successfully complete our program. At least bi-weekly, we will organize both formal and informal presentations and invite mentors to speak on a relevant topics. Highly successful entrepreneurs, investors, legal experts, and investors will present these as appropriate.
Typically, top executives from Southern Arizona visit and provide early feedback and opportunities to our companies. These sessions will include informal time that provides you with the opportunity to interact personally with the mentors. You will also meet with successful professionals with experience appropriate to your needs and focuses.
What won’t you do for me?
The key is that this is your company, not ours. You are the only one who can do the hard at work on your product or service. If you are expecting to only work on this during the weekly scheduled meetings, you will not be successful.
Do I have to be there for the entire ten week period?
No. However, you miss out on many of the spontaneous learning opportunities, networking, and coaching opportunities at our Southern Arizona location. Thryve is a major commitment, and we expect your undivided attention and commitment regardless of where you live and operate your business from. If you miss more than 2 scheduled sessions you may be asked to drop from the program and to reapply to a future session.
How can we get funded after Thryve ends?
We provide strong training and help you develop your pitch as well as your product. Also, near the end of the program, you will take part in Startup Weekend, IdeaFunding and other opportunities to pitch and receive feedback from investors. We’ll coach you so you’re as effective as possible, and do everything we can do help you pursue funding. However, we cannot and will not raise funding for you.
What if my startup doesn’t ultimately succeed?
Well, at least you tried. You’ll have an impressive resume item for your next gig that will look way better than almost anything else you could have spent your time doing. And you will have met a large number of smart and well-connected people who can help you tremendously with whatever you do next. Hopefully that will be another startup.
I’m a single founder. Can I get accepted into Thryve or do you only look for teams?
We don’t screen applications based on whether you are a single founder, but this is an intensive process and your time will be best spent if the work is shared by a team. Being alone makes things more difficult. We strongly advise you to seek co-founders who balance your skillset.
How can I find a co-founder to apply to Thryve with?
We highly suggest you visit CoLab, attend local meetups, and network with as many people as you can. . Check out some of the events on www.startuptucson.com.
How do you choose which companies to accept into the program?
Thryve has a selection committee comprised of entrepreneurs, investors, subject matter experts, and industry professionals. We like to work with great founders who are proposing startups that solve real problems or create meaningful impact. For us, it’s about the team and your work ethic. The best things you can do to strengthen your application is to round out your team with a visionary, builder, and hustler. Just like many investors, our decisions of who gets into the program are going to be tied heavily to your team and how well we believe you can execute on your vision. Also, show us you’ve really thought about your business and have gotten off your butt to do something about it.
Is my age a factor in your selection process?
Do I need to send in a business plan?
No. We just ask that you fill out our informal online application – that’s all you need for us. The purpose of our program is to help share your business. If you have a strong business plan, you probably don’t need this program. If you have written a business plan, but are still applying to our program, we probably need to try something different.
Who’s behind Thryve and why are you doing this?
We are a group of successful entrepreneurs, mentors, and investors who truly enjoy helping startups and think that Southern Arizona is a great place to start.

Is my company “too far along” to apply to Thryve?

Thryve will accepts applications from individuals, teams, existing ventures or employees of organizations. Our focus is on supporting the growth of great social impact projects.
My idea is amazing, and I don’t want to talk about it. What do I do?
We’re not in the business of stealing ideas. And when you apply to Thryve, we limit who sees your application to only our key leadership team. Each year our team sees hundreds of applications, pitches and business ideas. Many of these are similar ideas, and for this and other reasons, please do not ask us to sign an NDA. However, we respect your interest in protecting your intellectual property. Our application does not ask you to detail your IP. If you don’t have legal protection, then be sure you don’t disclose your “secret sauce”. Treat your IP as a “black box” and just talk about what goes in what comes out. You don’t need to explain “how” things get transformed inside the box to tell us about your idea.
